AMBIENT NEMESIS - A Call To Fear
(#RTF2025 OPENING FILM)
The opening film for this year's RTF is a feature titled "AMBIENT NEMESIS - A Call to Fear," envisioned and brought to life by a collaboration of filmmakers from across the globe (including all of us).
"AMBIENT NEMESIS" is a global cinematic collaboration, bringing together writers, actors, cinematographers, directors, and producers from various countries under a shared theme. Filmmakers taking part are required to shoot chosen scenes from the same film based on their own personal interpretation, from their respective locations, and are free to enhance the scenarios with additional subtexts and dialogue as they see appropriate. Alternatively, the filmmaker may develop their own scenario, provided it adheres to the original storyline and framework of the proposed film project. Subsequently, everyone is required to hand in their footage (clip) to the festival curator no later than October 4, 2025. Each contributor's filmed segment must be limited to three to four minutes, allowing over 20 filmmakers to collaborate on this groundbreaking feature film project. The festival team, made up of experienced filmmakers, will finalize the post-production process and ready the completed movie to premiere as the opening film for #RTF2025UK. At the conclusion of the opening night screening, all individuals who contributed to the filming, editing, or production of this collaborative project will step onto the stage to be acknowledged. The Mayor of Worcester, our host city, has committed to this and will feature in the scenes being filmed there! Don't you feel excited to join in?
MOVIE OUTLINE(SYNOPSIS)
"AMBIENT: A Call to Fear" is a psychological horror film that delves into the destructive power of negative self-talk and despair, manifesting as a malevolent entity that preys on human vulnerability.
The story opens with a series of unsettling, seemingly unconnected incidents across various cities, where ordinary individuals experience their worst fears and negative thoughts come to life. From Adam, paralyzed by social anxiety on a date, to Ali, whose car breaks down while he berates himself for poor planning, and Rachael, whose apartment turns hostile due to her fear of its age, each character receives an ominous, silent phone call just before their personal demons materialize into a terrifying shadow entity that twists their surroundings into instruments of their own self-inflicted misery. These escalating events lead to unexplained urban decay, structural collapses, and disappearances globally, baffling authorities.
The narrative then focuses on Harry, a young man at rock bottom, consumed by self-loathing and on the verge of giving up. In a desperate, accidental call, he reaches his estranged father, Leon, a psychiatrist. Despite his own personal struggles, including a strained marriage and a pending separation, Leon, acting as both therapist and father, offers Harry unconditional love and hope, encouraging him to embrace a new beginning.
This flicker of hope for Harry is tragically short-lived. Just as he expresses a desire to return home and change, the entity, fueled by his lifetime of negative thoughts, erupts from him, violently destroying his apartment and engulfing him. Leon, hearing his son's final screams, is left with a horrifying realization and profound grief. The entity, now more powerful and drawn by Leon's overwhelming despair, manifests in his office.
However, Leon refuses to succumb. He confronts the entity by focusing not on his loss or pain, but on cherished memories, the love for his son, and the fragile hope Harry had embraced moments before. His unwavering goodness and virtuous clarity create an impenetrable barrier, repelling the entity, which cannot feed on his positivity.
Defeated by Leon's resolve, the entity explodes outwards from his office, unleashing a global maelstrom of destruction, hatred, and despair across the city. It continues its rampage, manifesting as physical forces of addiction, poverty, and prejudice, becoming a pervasive plague feeding on humanity's collective negativity.
In a post-credits scene set in a timeless "Dark Dimension," two agents of darkness, serving a powerful Dark Lord, discuss their "score" in harvesting souls. The male agent is severely reprimanded for failing to fully claim Leon, whose "affirmation" of hope was transferred to his son. Tortured by the echoes of Leon's anguish and Harry's heartbeat, the failed agent is consumed by darkness.
The film concludes with a powerful twist: back in his squalid apartment, Harry stirs. Despite the devastation, Leon's hopeful words and love have reached him. Harry awakens with a newfound strength, declaring, "I am not a failure. My life counts," and reaches for his ringing phone, embracing a terrifying yet promising future.
